The genocide in Sudan had been happening for five years now, but still seems no closer to a resolution than when it started. In a report from the United Nations released this April, they still believe the prospect of peace is only a remote possibility.

While there are still disagreements on what must be done to end this, the more we know, the better equipped we become to take an effective course of action. The following is a list of current ideas about possible solutions, even though they are met with disagreement and controversy.

  • Urge China to help end genocide: China is an important country because they purchase almost three-quarters of Sudan’s global exports, and have provided Sudan with significant economic assistance. They also have blocked several international efforts to holding Sudan accountable for its actions. If China recognizes its rising global power, they could use it influence Sudan and help the people of Darfur.
  • Secure helicopters for the Darfur peacekeepers: The peacekeepers operate in the desert with only dirt roads as the way to get between major towns. Helicopters would prove to be the most efficient means of transportation, but no country has provided them yet. If the helicopters were provided, the peacekeeping efforts could become more successful.
  • Get peacekeepers on the ground: Peacekeepers were supposed to be fully equipped and on the ground as of December 31,2007. Less than half of the forces have actually set foot in Sudan, and we must ensure that the political efforts remain in order to deliver them help.
